Food Fashion!
Dr Emma has become a bit of a caricature of herself and wears food themed outfits every day! It started as a bit of fun & a way to express her personality, but she soon realized that her outfits were a tool to start conversations about food and nutrition sciences.
Follow on her socials for a new food outfit + food fact most days.

Did you know peaches and nectarines are the same fruit? The nectarine just has a mutation in one single gene which gives it a smooth skin instead of a fuzzy one!
A farmer noticed the natural mutation & selectively cross bred to create the “new” fruits.Cross pollination means sometimes they grow on the wrong tree!

Finally cleared enough left overs from the freezer to add some ice cream.
Batch cooking or bulk buying is a great way to save $$$ on healthy eating, but you need to first have the privilege of the $$$ & space to have enough fridge & freezer space to keep them!

Some think pasta is a carby waste of calories.
But I see pasta as a tool to help get the goodness of veggies in a tasty, affordable, satisfying meal. I grate carrot & zucchini into my bolognese, and I add peas & mushies to almost anything cream based.
The possibilities are endless.

Why do we assign some foods to particular meal times?
Well mostly its marketing, cultural/social norms, or convenience.
If you want steak for dinner and cereal for breakfast, you do you. Your body doesn’t pay ant attention to the labels!

Watermelon! A refreshing, hydrating, delicious, low calorie snack & great in a salad.
Contains vitamins A, C, and potassium.
DYK that the rinds can be used in cooking (stir fry or curry for example) or pickled. No waste!
Also, totally my colour.

They say an apple a day keeps the Dr. away... helpful saying & a great start but you can level up with variety!
Variety helps you get all the different nutrients in, & more variety —> increases total fruit & veg intake.
Variety doesn’t need to be exotic or exxy.

Did you know that #mushrooms make vitamin D in the sun? But we grow them in the dark!
If you flip them upside down on a sunny (open) windowsill for 15 mins.
Just 7 button mushrooms (or 1 portabella) will give you pretty much all the vitamin D you need for a day! (Based on Aussie sun)

For healthy choices go gently on the juice.
Sounds healthy (made from fruit! added vitamins!). But juicing concentrates the calories & ditches the fibre & sends all the sugar straight to your body. Its also easy to take in calories without feeling full.
And check the labels. If it’s called a fruit drink, beverage or punch it’s probably not just juice but likely to have added sugars & other ingredients.

In #donuts & #cupcakes but still a PhD qualified RNutr.
Your diet, clothing & body size do not define your expertise or qualities.
Eating “clean” doesn’t make you righteous.
Being slim doesn’t qualify you to give nutrition advice.
Wearing donuts doesn’t promote obesity.

You are what you eat. So, I’m ice cream? 🤷🏻♀️
The saying is kind of true but sometimes we take it too literally. Like “I’ve got diabetes now” after a sweet dessert. No, you don’t & this quip does people with diabetes a disservice - all types of diabetes are due to a complex interaction between diet, genetics & exposures.
Likewise what you eat isn’t the whole story. Two of us could eat exactly the same but different genetics could lead to completely different health & body types in response.
Be careful with clever sayings, they don’t tell the whole story.

In undervalued veg today.
People think corn & potatoes are less healthful because they are sweeter or starchier than other veg.
But they still have lots of good things in them, all veg are good veg and still better than just about any non veg option.
Don’t rank your veg, just eat a bunch of different ones.

Fruit is sweet, it does contain sugar.
But it also contains fibre and a bunch of important and healthy micronutrients & bioactive compounds.
The fibre smooths those sugar peaks & feeds our gut bacteria.
Fruit is not a junk food, no matter what the diet factions say.

Outfit FAQs
Where do you get your outfits & jewelry? Mostly online, sometimes they are gifts from friends, family or makers (if the maker gifts me I will say in the social post). Most of the dresses are retail available to anyone to purchase, some are customs that I have had made to order with fabric I have purchased.
Are you paid to tag the makers or wear their clothing? No, I buy my clothes like anyone else, occasionally a maker will trade me a dress or some earrings in exchange for the rights to use my photos in their promotional materials.
Do other scientists take you seriously when you dress like Ms Frizzle? Mostly, some are old fashioned and think I should “dress more seriously” but I assure you, I can pipette, analyze data, do statistics, and teach just fine while wearing a food themed outfit!
What lipstick are are wearing? All my lippies are from Gerard Cosmetics in their HydraMatte and MetalMatte ranges (again, I buy them like a normal person). They are liquid lippies, so I can blend differently to match outfit elements.
How do you wear all those dresses in the heat without getting thigh chafe? Those with slimmer thighs might not understand this question, but I avoid the old “chub rub” with Snag Chub Rub Shorts (little shorts to wear under your dresses/skirts, and Mega Babe Thigh Rescue, a roll on balm.
Are your glasses prescription? Yes, I do need them for seeing! But since I have to wear them pretty much all the time (unless I’m wearing contact lenses), I figure I might as well make them fun. I order them from online stores like Zeelool to keep them affordable.
